Feline Health Guide

Ideal Cat Weight

Keeping your cat at their ideal body weight is one of the most important things you can do for their long-term health and quality of life.

What is a Healthy Weight for My Cat?

Most domestic cats should weigh between 3.6kg and 5.4kg, though this varies by breed. A raw diet helps cats maintain their ideal weight more easily than processed food because it is high in protein, naturally low in carbohydrates and free from fillers that contribute to feline obesity.

Overweight cats are at significantly higher risk of diabetes, arthritis, urinary tract disease and a shortened lifespan. Monitoring your cat's weight regularly is one of the simplest health checks you can do at home.

Feeding Guidelines by Life Stage

Use these as a starting point and adjust based on your cat's body condition and activity level.

🐱

Adult Cats

Feed 2-4% of ideal body weight daily across 2-3 meals. A 4kg cat needs approximately 80-160g of raw food per day depending on activity level.

🐣

Kittens Under 6 Months

Feed up to 10% of current body weight daily across 3-4 meals. Monitor weight weekly and adjust as they grow.

🐈

Kittens 6-12 Months

Reduce to 5-6% of body weight daily across 3 meals as growth slows. Transition towards adult feeding guidelines by 12 months.

👴

Senior Cats 7 Plus

Senior cats often need slightly less food but higher quality protein. Feed 2-3% of ideal body weight and monitor for weight loss which can signal health issues.

Body Condition Check

Run your hands along your cat's ribcage. Ideal: ribs felt but not seen. Overweight: ribs hard to feel. Underweight: ribs and spine visible without pressing.

⚖️

Adjust as Needed

If your cat is losing weight increase portions by 10-15% and reassess after 2 weeks. If gaining reduce by 10%. Consult your vet if significant weight changes occur.
